Double Entry Journal #2
This double entry journal was done while doing my preliminary research, but I decided to add it to my blog because this was the video that helped me form one of my essential questions, and my responses are going to help with answering it.
Single moms: Stop talking about how brave and cool you are - YouTube
Quote #1: "it's a team effort, and the idea hat you could just become a dictator all of the sudden is bad news!"
Notes: If there are two parents, there is a good balance because dads tend to be more fun while mothers are more strict. After doing more research, I found out that not having a balance between fun and rules is one of the main reasons why some people believe that single parents are bad.
Quote #2: "I'm sorry you're unhappy, fix it, this isn't about you, it's about the kids, so grow up!"
Notes: He is basically saying that once you're a parent you can't be happy, but I don't totally agree.; Being a parent means you have to sacrafice many things butt your happiness and mental health is still important. parents with good mental health are much more likely to raise kids with good mental health. I also didn't like how he said "grow up," as if happiness was only for children to experience. I think he lacks understanding because he hasn't experienced being a single parent, and was only looking at pro- single mom propaganda. If he does have children, I would guess that he was lucky enough to have brought them up in a nuclear family, which would explain his negative view on single parents.
Quote #3: "If you knowingly saddle your kids with a single parent, you've abused them."
Notes: McInnes said this when he was talking about how some single parents adopt. I've read in some articles that single parents are perfectly capable, and read in others that children need two parents in order to grow up with a fully developed mind. I don't know if I agree or disagree yet, but further research will probably help me out. It is also possible that no parenting scenario can ever be perfect, and maybe single parents aren't as bad as the media says they are. This is the quote that helped me come up with the question, "does being a single parent interfere with the ability to be a good parent?"
